We need a global & transparent climate accounting system to achieve the Paris agreement - calling all planetary stakeholders to build it.
We need a global & transparent climate accounting system to achieve the Paris agreement. The open climate mission is an open source initiative exploring the application of distributed ledgers and other emerging digital technologies toward the challenge of helping actors meet their climate pledges and prevent warming above 1.5oC. To crowd develop a platform, as hub for the climate accounting system, we are organising global collaborative hackathon— i.e. collabathons.

The products we consume on a daily basis can be linked to severe climate impacts due to unsustainable supply chains. Consumers are mostly not aware of the side-effects due to weak disclosure laws. The palm oil industry is a good example of how unsustainable supply chains feed into this asymmetry of information in regards to goods. Research, propose and develop a model that can use transparent supply chain tracking (eg. using blockchain) to inform consumers of the products environmental footprint (eg. in the label and in qr code) and leverages the use of consumer law with smart contracts. The Yale Openlab team started to transcribe the Paris Agreement into an Ethereum-based Solidity smart contract to explore three use-cases: 1) a digital transformation of the reporting process itself 2) the creation of utility tokens as an accounting mechanism to keep records based on two variables: whether the countries reported and whether they achieved their NDC pledge. 3) a parallel mechanism involving a reward/penalty mechanism.

Task: Review the smart contract, improve it in regards to the first use-case of automation, and develop the tokenization mechanism. Finally, propose the integration of the smart contract within the OpenClimate platform ecosystem. Stabilizing the climate requires less CO2 emissions and ways to extract carbon from the atmosphere. Carbon sequestration describes long-term storage of carbon dioxide or other forms of carbon. Carbon is naturally captured by the biosphere and stored in biomass. This is part of the Earth’s ecosystem services. Most biomass degrades and releases the carbon back into the atmosphere. Producing biochar from agricultural biomass waste, using a process called pyrolysis, is a way to fix the carbon stored in the biomass into a more stable form. How can the concepts of ecosystem services be integrated with processes of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere and integrating it into the soil? How can we reliably measure the elemental carbon sequestered from the weighted biochar?
